2019 annual report
Activities
We held our inaugural meeting on 27/06/2019 which was attended by 12 participants representing key stakeholders in primary dental care (NIHR ACFs /DRF, HEE, FDGP and the chair of the new college of dentistry who participated by T-con). The meeting was well received and ACFs were able to present posters of their ongoing research.
Future plans:
- Further meetings at SAPC 2020 with the possibility of a primary dental care ACF meeting to encourage junior dentists into academic primary dental care career pathways and enhance research collaborations.
- Coordination of the SIGs work on academic primary dental care with efforts to establish a clinical studies group within the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) is on-going. Trials relating to reducing antibiotic prescribing for adults with acute dental conditions and to the phase out of amalgam dental filling material are planned
Evidence of Impact
- The SIG has led to collaboration between SAPC and the new college of dentistry (CGDENT) and SAPC support for the new college which has on overarching aim of supporting primary dental care careers, research and education.
- The inaugural meeting has drawn interest from the British Dental Association (BDA) colleagues who heard positive feedback from the inaugural meeting and would like to be included in the future work of the group.
How affiliation with SAPC has helped the SIG
Recognition for primary dental care nationally with positive acknowledgement from HEE, FGDP, college of dentistry and BDA (British Dental Association).
