Professor Amanda Howe to be next President of RCGP
Congratulations to Professor Amanda Howe, University of East Anglia, who will be the next President of the Royal College of General Practitioners, taking over from Professor Mayur Lakhani in November 2019. Amanda is the immediate past-President of the World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA) and is also an ex-Chair of SAPC. She is head of the Primary Care Group at UEA, and a lead within the MED Department of Primary Care and Public Health. Her research involvement with clinical research and the evaluation of interventions is through leading on the application of qualitative research methods to specific studies – she has also supported the other academic social scientists within the medical school programme. Her research interests include mental health, professionalism and resilience, and effective empowerment of patients and professionals in care, education and research. She also has an interest in health policy and its relevance to family medicine developments worldwide.
Amanda has long been a passionate advocate of general practice and primary care, and also of its academic role. We know she will be an excellent President of the College and look forward to working with Amanda through the College. Both Amanda and Mayur are long-standing members of SAPC, as are several of the other candidates for President this year. We believe that this close working relationship between ourselves and the College can only futher the profile of academic general practice and primary care.
