Understanding scholarship

Scholarship is more than research.

The output of research is new knowledge generated through "the systematic investigation, or study, of a phenomenon ".

The practice of research - the work that researchers do - embraces the wider tasks of schoalrship as described by Boyer, being:

  • DISCOVERY of knowledge and ideas
  • INTEGRATION of knowledge and ideas across boundaries
  • APPLICATION of same with critical rigour to evaluate impact trustworthiness and applicability
  • INSPIRATION of others including through teaching

SAPC therefore recognises and champions scholarship at the heart of academic primary care practice.

SAPC and RCGP also recognise and champion scholarship at the heart of clinical primary care/GP practice as recognised within the WISE GP programme.
