RCGP Awards | Criteria
Background of award:
The John Fry Award is an annual award presented by nomination by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), in consultation with the Society of Academic Care (SAPC).
The award honours the contributions of John Fry to research and academic scholarship in general practice. Established in 1995, the first award was presented to Professor Mike Pringle.
The John Fry Award is presented to a Member or Fellow of the College who has promoted the discipline of general practice through research and scholarship. The award is intended to recognise the contribution of a practising GP undertaking impactful research within 10 years of qualification as a GP and not holding a professorial role.
The recipient receives a silver medal, which is normally presented at an RCGP awards ceremony.
Eligibility and how to enter
Nominator requirements
The nomination must include:
1. A supporting statement explaining how the nominee has advanced the discipline of general practice through research and scholarship, and why they should receive the John Fry Award.
2. Evidence of the nominee’s contributions to:
- Research
- Scholarship
- Leadership
- Demonstrating values consistent with those of RCGP
3. A copy of the nominee’s most significant publication (a web link is preferred where available)
4. A complete list of the nominee’s publications
Nominee requirements
To be considered for the John Fry Award, nominees must submit:
1. A personal statement explaining why they wish to be considered for the award.
2. A current CV, including a complete list of publications.
3. A copy of their most significant publication (a web link is preferred where available).
4. A supporting statement from a senior academic who is familiar with their work. The statement should explain how the nominee has advanced the discipline of general practice through research and scholarship, why they should receive the John Fry Award, and describe their contributions to:
- Research
- Scholarship
- Leadership
- Demonstrating values consistent with those of the RCGP
Judging process
1. Nominations must be submitted to the SAPC Awards Committee by the advertised deadline (usually end of January each year)
2. The SAPC Awards Committee appoints a panel of senior primary care academics, including clinical and Primary Health Care Scientists (PHoCuS) members, to review the nominations.
3. Then panel confirms that nominees meet the eligibility criteria and assesses each nomination against the award criteria (as mentioned above).
4. Based on this assessment, the SAPC Awards Committee recommends a recipient to the RCGP Fellowship and Awards Committee.
5. SAPC provides the RCGP with the recommended nominee’s supporting documentation, a summary of the reasons for the recommendation, and a list of all nominees.
6. The RCGP Fellowship and Awards Committee reviews the recommendation and makes the final decision.
7. In exceptional circumstances, the RCGP may decide not to accept the SAPC recommendation. If this happens, the RCGP Provost will determine the next step.
