Richard Byng works in Plymouth as a general practitioner at Adelaide Street Surgery and was a GPwSI in mental health in the Icebreak Team for young people (2005-2025). He is Professor in Primary Care Research at the University of Plymouth specialising in developing and evaluating care for individuals with mental health problems and complex health and social needs. His work spans policy through to primary care consultations. Increasingly he is examining whole systems approaches. He has developed innovative community based services including the Rushey Green Time Bank and collaborative care for prison leavers, and individuals with dementia and psychosis. He leads the University of Plymouth Community and Primary Care Research Centre and is Deputy Director of the South West Peninsula ARC. He leads the development of an NIHR funded Mental Health Research Group focused on System Balance for mental health.
