Dr Hassan Awan

SAPC Role
Executive Committee Member - ECA Co lead, SAPC ASM 2022 Scientific Programme Committee

Dr Hassan Awan is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Primary Care at Keele University with a research interest in mental health of underserved communities and cultural safety within healthcare research. Through his Wellcome-funded PhD, he explored emotional distress in South Asian men with long-term conditions. His work combines clinical practice as a GP in a diverse urban setting with academic expertise in co-producing research with communities traditionally excluded from health research. He has established and led ethnically-appropriate patient advisory groups, developed novel dissemination methods including co-created animations, and built lasting partnerships between healthcare services and marginalised communities. This experience in meaningful community engagement has directly informed his approach to developing culturally-centred interventions in primary care mental health.
