Introduction by Carolyn Chew-Graham
Nick Thomas (Clinical Research Lead, RCGP) and I had great pleasure in attending a 'virtual' seminar hosted by St Luke's Hospice, Sheffield, at which the winner of the Yvonne Carter award, Sarah Mitchell, presented her PhD study 'a realist inquiry into the delivery of palliative care to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions'.
Sarah's application for the Yvonne Carter award was outstanding, emphasising her career portfolio which encompasses clinical practice, NHS leadership and primary care research. She was a worthy winner of this prestigious award.
Sarah's excellent, and moving, presentation challenged the audience to 'do things differently' - and I will certainly take lessons back to my practice for discussion.
I do hope Sarah is able to use her award to visit Dr Amy Tan at the University of Calgary to build on this important collaboration to enable her to take this vital work forwards.

Comment from Sarah Mitchell
Winning the 2020 Yvonne Carter award has meant a great deal to me. It feels like a huge vote of confidence from my own professional bodies and I honestly never thought I would win it. I hope that the presentation inspires others to consider research or policy work as part of their career and to improve the care of children and young people with complex and palliative care needs. I am happy to have been able to rise to the challenge of doing things differently to produce a presentation that we can share on the SAPC website (and thank you Sheffield GPs and community nurses and the St Luke's ECHO team for making that possible).
